Diego Maradona New Argentina Coach

Now that Alfio Basile has stepped down as Argentina coach, who is being asked to take the reigns of the Albicelestes?

None other than the greatest football player of all time - Diego Maradona.

According to reports out of Argentina, the ‘Hand of God’ maestro is set to be unveiled as the new new coach of the Argentina national football team.

The news follows a meeting between Maradona and the Argentina Football Association (AFA) president, Julio Grondona, this evening in Buenos Aires.

The former Boca Juniors, Napoli and Barcelona star is now 47 years old and despite being on his death bed a few years ago, has made a quick recovery to re-appear on the national and international stage.

Sergio Batista, coach of the Argentina under-20 side, was believed to be in the frame for the position as well, but Maradona’s iconic status - many believe he is the greatest footballer to grace the game - looks to have been the deciding factor in swaying the AFA’s decision.

The appointment would be deemed risky given Maradona’s numerous personal problems and limited experience as a coach in just two brief stints at Argentine club sides Racing Club de Avellaneda and Mandiyú de Corrientes.

MY POV: Risky? RISKY?!? Is there a strong enough word to describe the risk attributed to handing the reigns of one of the world’s greatest teams to one of its most unstable icons?

While it’s true that Maradona graced the footballing stage with his presence, the rampant excesses of his life tell the story of an undisciplined, immature man.

Hopefully ‘El Pibe’ has cleaned up his life enough to lead Argentina to the World Cup.

One thing is certain: The Argentine national team just got a whole lot more interesting!!

SPANISH CUP 2008/09: LAST 32 TEAMS - FC BARCELONA THANKS TO BOJAN

The SPANISH CUP has entered the last 32 team phase with the
big mayor 1º Division Clubs making their appearance tonight.
FC BARCELONA played inferior BENIDORM away in the 1ºst leg

clash to win by a solitary goal by BOJAN in the 55th min.

Barça left some big names at home: Xavi, Iniesta, Valdez, Messi
… & suffered all night against a team that decided to “build” a
defensive wall, wait & counter-attack. Benidorm even hit the post

in the 12th min from a header that nearly rocked Barça.

However, the Catalans got away with an away win which should
set them up nicely for the return clash at “Camp Nou” & seal the
tie for the next phase.

More, & the main Spanish Cup clashes tomorrow night!

REAL MADRID IS DICTATOR FRANCO FOOTBALL CLUB.

The Manchester United Manager/Coach Sir Alex Ferguson has
given an interview to “GQ” were his comments have let SFS down.
So much so, that my estime for this Football professional has fallen

to a level that I believe this man is a complete idiot, a clown &
a morron.

It hurts me to say this, really, but to comment in 2008 that Real Madrid
is the Football team of Dictator Franco is absolutely absurd. It´s even

worst, he has called the team a Fascist Club, this explains why they
always get their way… Rubbish, what the fuck is this man talking
about?

It all seems to come from Real Madrid´s attempts to sign Cristiano
Ronaldo, who by the way is an individual old enough to decide for

himself & take decisions on his future by himself. Real Madrid made the
offer, the player took the decision to attempt to leave Manchester
United because it was his dream to play at Real. That he decided to

stay has nothing to do with the outragous comments made by
Ferguson, if fact, why say it if you/Club got its way: keep Ronaldo at
Manchester, you won the battle!

It seems that he has an obsession with the Spanish Club, an inferiority
complex that maybe becoming a psychological problem. Using terms
as Fascists & mixing it with Football & Sport is appalling & shows
no knowlegde what so ever of anything outside of his office & the
Old Trafford sideline. No respect at all for honest folk who suffered at

the hands of Franco during the Spanish Civil War, folk who are Real
Madrid fans. By the way, SFS is not defending Real Madrid, all SFS

regular readers know SFS is Atletico. But Ferguson is a Buffon! A
stupid primative in a track suit who has put a serious stain of shit
on the term “SIR” that the Queen of England has given him.

But this man has no limits, as clowns do when on a roll. He accuses that
Real Madrid signed Heinze only because he is Cristiano´s best mate & it
was
a way to get to Ronaldo. A sick mind indeed & dangerous.

SFS is really sadden by this & it could be a sign that the reign of Ferguson
at Manchester & in Football is coming to an end. Lets hope so, because the

man is insane!

Being a Barca Supporter Gets you Jail Time?

Kind of a weird story coming out from Morocco … but bear with me …

According to news reports, an 18-year old Moroccan schoolboy was jailed for insulting the country’s king after replacing the monarch’s name with that of his favorite football club FC Barcelona.

He altered the phrase “God, The Nation, The King” on the school blackboard to read “God, The Nation, Barcelona”.

FC Barcelona says it has appointed a lawyer to look into whether they can help the boy, within the framework of Moroccan law.

The BBC’s James Copnall in Rabat says it is not completely clear whether the court felt the remarks about the football club or other apparent insults to the king were the problem.

The Moroccan justice ministry has not commented on the case.

The family of the boy, Yassine Belassal, is appealing against the ruling, and his father told local news papers he was preparing to write a letter to King Mohamed VI asking for a royal pardon.

An internet campaign is also under way to have Mr Belassel freed.

Earlier this year one man received a three-year sentence for creating a mock Facebook profile of the King’s brother, before receiving a royal pardon.

Last month, another man was jailed after suggesting that some royal practices did not help the development of the country.

He was cleared on appeal following a media outcry.

MY POV: I’m definitely not a Barcelona fan, but I doubt I’d ask for jail time for any of the club’s supporters … well, on second thought …

Tough case and I’m unsure about what this says of Morocco’s legal and free speech system … maybe, that it’s null and void? Let’s see how this plays out.

Dispatches from the Relegation Zone: Redknapp Revolt Edition!

Yeah, we’re still down in the gutter, but Hot Damn, I think I can see me some stars! Harry Hotspur has been on board just four days and already a calm has come about the club. Is this normalcy? The manager actually speaking to the press for a couple minutes after the match. Glory! David Bentley on the right? Audere est Facere! Shirt numbers for the Ramos Five! The Redknapp Revolt!

I haven’t been this excited since… oh dear.

False Dawn? It was not eight months ago that Spurs fans, journos, and impartial observers off all stripes were fairly convinced that Ramos had us headed for big things. The Mourinho/Wenger comparisons, fanciful even at the time, were propped up by that magical Carling Cup run.

I maintain that Ramos was the best man to lead the team against Chelsea at Wembley, and for that alone all Spurs fans should wish the wispy Spaniard safe travels home. (Comolli: Drive your Peugeot into a ditch.)

But the world seemed to conspire against him after that brilliant February night. League and UEFA Cup dreams died grisly deaths (though, if Jenas knocks home his PK in Eindhoven… ugh) and by the time Keane and Berbatov had defected the team was a shambles. That’s not to say some of us weren’t complicit in this mass pre-season delusion, but sitting here, now, the absurdity is obvious.

So with Redknapp now in charge, Spurs have a proven communicator. A fella known for building his players up– a welcome change from a guy who quite literally stripped some of them down. As for results? Lesson learned. Let’s just say it can’t get much worse.

Arsenal tomorrow. Take something there and we might be onto something…

Goodbye to an Arsenal legend in the making

I would like to take the opportunity to say goodbye to a man who could have achieved legendary status at Arsenal.

Never given the chance to fulfill his true potential, he was sacked ruthlessly despite winning his team a new tea-mug, the first tea-mug they had won since 1999.

He was set to take his team to new heights, the dream of a top four finish would not have been beyond his club in the Championship.

Although his pride is dented, the reported £7.5 million compensation claim will no doubt help to heal his wounded ego.

Gooners world-wide, I’d like to say goodbye to Juande Ramos, who given the chance could “one-day” have helped Tottenham Hotspur be relegated. You could have been an Arsenal legend Juande.

Goodbye Mr Ramos.

Keep it Goonerish…………..

Love your club over the king? This way to jail.

Moroccan King Mohamed VI

FC Barcelona has some dedicated fans, but I think Yassine Belassal is the strongest one yet. He’s looking at jail time for his expression of love for the blaugrana.

In Morocco, the phrase “God, The Nation, The King” is a common expression, for it encapsulates the three things all Moroccans must love and respect. It’s rare for people to speak out openly against the current monarch, King Mohamed VI, but those that have end up in jail, and young Mr. Belassal has recently joined them.

Yassine, an 18-year-old schoolboy, came into the classroom and altered the phrase written on the blackboard to read “God, The Nation, Barcelona”, and it became so much more than detention and extra homework.

It is unclear whether the court felt the problem was about the football club or the inference against the king, but Yassine is currently sitting in jail awaiting resolution. Barcelona have appointed a lawyer to look into the legal fine print to see whether the boy can be helped under the letter of Moroccan law.

Based on the precedent set earlier this year, it’s not looking good — Fouad Mourtada was jailed for 3 years after creating a spoof Facebook profile for the King’s brother. A blogger was also jailed in 2008 for speaking out against the king on his website, but he was released and cleared upon appeal, giving some hope to Belassal and his family.

So to summarize: love your club, but don’t love it like this in a country that’s still coming round to the 21st century. I hope this one works out in the end.

Shun-Celtic Cashamora

Celtic Midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura is set to quit Scotland FOR JAPAN at just 30 years old. Join me to speculate why, after the jump.

Nakamura currently has a ankle injury that is strapped before every game and the Japanese middy fears that his career could end short if he continues to play in the wet conditions that Scotland offers him weekly. Of course we all know that it doesn’t rain in Japan.

But it will this week! Why would he be playing injured? Surely Celtic would rather have a fit Shunsuke, no? Even with the expense of a lay-off for treatment?

So is the weather the real reason or does Shunsuke want out Parkhead? Could the team in his desired destination be offering him lots of money? Nothing screams ambition like a move to the Yokohama Morino’s right?

“I want to play football for a long time but at the moment my right ankle is giving me problems. I have to get it heavily strapped before every game I play in. I want to be the best I can be and I’m not able to do that right now. It is frustrating.”

- Nakamura yesterday.

Oh, so he wants to be the best he can be! Then the J-League is the right place. After all, Gary Lineker thought so didn’t he? When Nagoya Grampus Eight offered him a handsome salary and gave Tottenham 5 million smackers back in 1991. Nothing like a final pay day to bring out the bullshit, regardless of the language it’s spoken in.
