ATLETICO DE MADRID LOOK AT BELGIUM FOR NEW BLOOD

Local paper “Marca” runs a piece on the ATLETICO DE MADRID
scouts who are looking at the Belgium Football market for future talents.
They go on to say that two names are on their minds & both are

from STANDARD LEIGE. The first is 19 year old AXEL WITSEL
(below) a defensive midfielder with goal.

The second is 20 year old STEVEN DEFOUR (below) who is a
creative midfielder, however “less” talented than the former mentioned

according to those in the “know”.

Lastly, continuing with scouting markets for new talents, Atletico de
Madrid are also eyeing French 18 year old promise SOFIANE FEGHOULI
of French Club GRENOBLE. The news is that so are Juventus, Fiorentina,

Inter, Arsenal, Chelsea & PSG following the player which gives Atletico stiff
competition.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 2008/09 GROUP QUALIFIERS: MIXED NIGHT FOR SPANIARDS

Two Spanish teams had their last Group game qualifiers tonight,
before going into the draw the 19th of December, seeing that they
had already qualified for the next stage of Champions League. The
only difference is that one was guaranteed top spot of Group C & the
another was playing
for it in Group D.

FC BARCELONA who had Top spot sealed, hosted SHAKHTAR with

its “A team” rested as Barça had its head in next weekends mighty
clash against Real Madrid. Shakhtar had nothing to lose & it showed as
they won 2-3 in a interesting game full of goals.

Merit must go to Shakhtar with two goals from GLADKY & late in the

match by FERNANDINHO, who deserved the victory.

Barça attempted a comeback in the 2ºhalf with goals from SYLVINHO
& BUSQUETS but it was´nt enough, however
nothing changed, Barça
finish on top of the Group & Shakhtar
had a grand night out.

ATLETICO DE MADRID travelled to the “heated & overly excited”

OLYMPIQUE DE MARSELLA ground to see their game finish in a
0-0 draw. Atletico had its place in the next stage covered but wanted
to finish on top to have the advantage of the 2ºleg home advantage
in the next stage/game. That did not happen as Liverpool won its game
1-3 over PSV to take the Group top spot.

The game gave chances to both sides with Atletico going conservative

as the game went on & Olympique getting stronger with excellent
chances that Atletico goalkeeper brilliantly kept out. In the end, both
ran out of steam & it finished as it started, the only difference that
Atletico go through & Olympique go into the Uefa Cup competition.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE GROUP QUALIFIERS 2008/09: ATLETICO DE MADRID & FC BARCELONA WIN

The Spanish representatives of Group C & D in the Champions League
had their turn tonight & won their respective games. Here is a quick
summary of the scores, scorers & images.

Lets start with Group D & Atletico de Madrid , because SFS prefers
it that way :)

ATLETICO DE MADRID hosted PSV EINDOVEN in an empty
stadium, due to the Uefa sanction over the “violence” when Lyon
visited in their first game. That fact, & the cold atmosphere did not

hamper Atletico who won 2-1 & managed to go on to qualify for the
next
phase along with Liverpool ( both share the Group leadership).

In fact, Atletico played well & started early to show its dominance
with a goal by SIMAO in the 14th min, that was later followed with
another by MAXI RODRIGUEZ ( below) in the 27th min.

See his goal on video:

The 2º half was more of the same with good At.Madrid play but PSV
pulled one back early to create hope & put some nerves into Atleticos´s
system with a goal by KOEVWRMANS in the 47th min. But Atletico

held out, played their game & managed to hold on & stand still to
the Dutch.

FC BARCELONA are in great form & put on a show against
SPORTING LISBOA with a 2-5 victory. They are clear
leaders of Group C & have qualified for the next stage with
clear dominance
.

The 1ºst half saw Barça run riot with goals by HENRY in the
13th min & PIQUE in the 16th min, to later see Sporting gain its

head to at least halt the Barça onslaught.

However, Barça again opened the flood gates in the 2ºhalf with
more goals from MESSI in the 50th min, CARNEIRA in the 67th
min & BOJAN from the penalty spot in the 73rd min.

Sporting also got into the goal action in the 2ºhalf with goals from
VELOSO in the 65th min & LIEDSON in the 66th min…two minutes

of glory tonight for Sporting, but just 2 minutes!

Good win for Barça they look really good in Europe folks!

ATLETICO DE MADRID FOLLOWING RIVER PLATE PROMISE

According to “Marca”, ATLETICO DE MADRID is following young
23 year old GUSTAVO CABRAL, central defender for Argentine Club
RIVER PLATE

Atletico is also following two other 18 year old youngsters. The first
is JAIME ROMERO of 2º Division side Albacete ( also following are
Liverpool, Espanyol, Valencia & Villareal), the second is
SOFIANE
FEGHOULI
who is currently in French Club GRENOBLE.

Stay tuned!

ATLETICO DE MADRID: SWEDISH REFEREE NOT SURE IT WAS A PENALTY

The last moment penalty given against Atletico de Madrid which

allowed Liverpool to equalize in last Tuesday´s Champions League
Group qualifier is still giving us news & plenty to talk about.

It´s clear from the video that the penalty did not exist. If doubts

still continued, here is what the Swedish Referee Martin Hansson
said on Swedish TV “SVT Sport” & was picked up by the World Sport
Press (translated) : “From the position
I was on the field, I´m not
convienced it was a penalty

There you go folks…if things are to be done right, UEFA should
ban this referee for at least 3 games…but…

Spanish Sports daily “Sport” put in a little humour in their “Futbolitis”

cartoon section with Atletico de Madrid Coach Aguirre “voicing his
opinion”… (translated):

“To Platini I say XXXX & XXXX, XXXX, XXXX &…. plus XXXXXXXX

totally XXXX feedup”

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 2008/09 GROUP TUESDAY QUALIFIERS - BOTH SPANISH TEAMS DRAW

It was said that the real reason both Aguero & Torres did not start
is because both sides were looking for the draw to qualify in Group
D together - RUBBISH - right?

ATLETICO DE MADRID has gone away from Anfield with a 1-1
draw after the referee called an non-existent penalty in the last
minutes of play in favour of LIVERPOOL FC. Thats Football, right?

Both teams played brilliantly, it was end to end stuff & the home
crowd of Liverpool was giving their side wings. But , Atletico were
pumped & better positioned with the reward coming in the 36th
min when MAXI RODRIGUEZ scored a great goal to put his team
ahead.

The rest was typical. Liverpool going after the draw & Atletico the
counter & to keep out Liverpool. It looked like that would happen &
give the Spanish side the dream win, when the unthinkable & the
non-existent happened. Like magic the referee call a penalty in favour
of Liverpool that did not occure. Both Pernia & Gerrard contested
the ball in the area without any foul, in fact the referee blew before
contact. Baffled!!!

STEVEN GERRARD scored the penalty in the 95th min to draw &
leave
the Atletico crowd asking …”What happened”?

See a full summary & the highlights of the game in this video:

In the other game with Spanish representation, FC BARCELONA
drew 1-1 with BASILEA in
Group C. Surprising result as everyone

expected a goal rush for Barça even though this win gave them
automatic qualification for the next stage.

Slow, inaccurate & sloppy play from Barça who scored in the 63rd min
thanks to MESSI. Then it happened, DERDYOK scored the equalizer in
the 83rd min. Even the Basilea Goalkeeper Franco Costanzo ( below)
celebrated the goal. SFS supposes it was a case of: got the job done!

The only bad news is the FC Barcelona will lose Iniesta to injury.
He will go medical examination to see the extent of the damage.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE GROUP C & D QUALIFIERS 2008/09: FC BARCELONA WINS & ATLETICO SAVES THE DAY

FC BARCELONA wished the top spot of Group C & did so in grand
style steamrolling BASILEA 5-0. The goals came all in 48 mins starting

with MESSI (3rd m), BUSQUETS ( 14th m), BOJAN ( 21st & 48th m)
& XAVI ( 48th min).

This sould secure Barça qualification for the next stage of Champions &
give the side a great moral boost to face the local League with confidence
& faith in its game.

Nice to see young Bojan back in the line-up & watch his two goals.

Great atmosphere without incident at the ATLETICO DE MADRID
vs LIVERPOOL FC Group D clash which ended in a 1- 1 draw.

Liverpool scored first via KEANE in the 13th min in a goal that looked

offside. This distracted the Spaniards as past “phantoms” of defeat
hoovered through their heads. So much so, that Atletico Coach Aguirre
was playing tonight his future, which added to the local tension.

However, Atletico pulled out it´s true grit & turned on the play in the 2ºhalf
with a disallowed goal from Maniche & Simao hitting the post in the 57thmin.
Then the Portugues International - SIMAO - managed to bring down the
stadium when he equalized with his goal in the 83rd min.

Shared points & back to Anfield to see who finally leads this Group.

FERNANDO TORRES TO WATCH THE ALLETICO - LIVERPOOL CHAMPIONS CLASH AT HOME

It was the dream of FERNANDO TORRES, Atletico de Madrid
fans & Football Lovers in general to see the return of the prodigal

son to the “Vicente Calderon” Stadium in Madrid for the Atletico
de Madrid vs Liverpool Champions League clash next Wednesday.

However, that dream went wrong when reality struck with the
injury of Fernando Torres last Wednesday night when representing
Spain against Belgium. He was taken off midway through the 1º half
with a muscle strain that will keep him off the field for 10 days at
least.

Big blow for Torres, who was “dying” to return “home” with the
colours of Liverpool. Maybe it will finally be good luck for Atletico

that Liverpool have´nt on their field the main goalscorer!
