We heard about this late last weekend or early this week but could not confirm it. But, apparently US Soccer Global can confirm that Roman Abramovich, Chelsea owner, was in NYC last weekend and stopped by Nevada Smith’s to watch the Chelsea Spartak London-Bolton match.
I know Chelsea is tightening the purse strings these days, but I hope Roman wasn’t so chintzy as to not buy a round for the bar.

Money trouble. Drogba throws a coin into the Burnley fans last night.
Chelsea forward Didier Drogba is in hot water this morning after launching a coin into the away section of the crowd during last night’s defeat (on penalties) to Burnley. Surely he was just trying to give that nice, angry looking gentleman his money back?. He could have claimed that defence but he sealed his fate with a well executed finger salute.
The incident happened on 27 mins after Drogba had fired the blues in front. A Burnley goon lobbed a coin which Drogba picked up and threw back. He then flipped the visiting fans the bird! The Football Asociation and Police are investigating the incident which could see Drogba handed a lengthy ban as well as a hefty fine.

Drogba soon realized his faux pas and was very apologetic last night…
“The big mistake I did was to throw it back so if someone was hurt I just want to apologise. This is not something I should show and I want to apologise. It was an incident in the heat of the moment and I regret it. It was just a mistake and nothing more.”
-Didier Drogba.
Forethought is a wonderful thing isn’t it? Drogba’s stupidity capped a horrid night for Chelsea as they were dumped from the Carling Cup 5-4 on Penalties by Burnley. The game ended 1-1 after Ade Akinbiyi had levelled late on to force extra time.
After 4 years of being unbeatable at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea have now lost there in 2 of the last 3 outings. Throw in a 3-1 defeat at Roma last week and Chelsea are starting to look mortal again.
Drogba’s absence certainly won’t help them out, I should imagine a minimum ban of 5 games is headed his way.

Roman’s new taste?
Since 2003, Chelsea FC has been the place where great players congregate to get paid immense sums and there has been no such thing as budget. That has finally changed this year. First, Chelsea gets outbid by Manchester City and its oil barons for Robinho. Now, The Guardian reports that Chelsea is
cutting its 25 man scouting division by 15.
The economic credit crunch is believed partially at fault, as is its woeful performance. There hasn’t been a significant development from Chelsea’s youth squads to the senior squad that I can recall. Given Chelsea’s style on proven players–overpay them–you would think the same would occur for the youth teams. Clearly, that isn’t the case or the scouts are truly awful and waste the money.
And now, British courts have ruled that Roman Abramovich’s interest in Chelsea is purely a hobby. Despite proclamations that Roman wants to make Chelsea profitable, the court has had its say, and it says that is just a pipe dream.
Abramovich has poured hundreds of millions into the club but Clarke described his involvement as a “hobby and a leisure interest … It is not a business investment. The sums that Mr Abramovich has given to the club far exceed any return that could possibly be expected”.
The Guardian article details much of Abramovich’s wealth that came out during a court case where Roman argued British courts did not have jurisdiction over him. It’s a fascinating laundry list of chalets, villas, art and a fortune built off of shady business dealings.
So, what happens when Roman’s tastes change? Does the $500 billion dollar interest free loan to
Is it all a sign the Roman Abramovich’s interest in Chelsea is waning? If so, what does it mean for Chelsea? Will the $500 million dollar interest free loan be called in? What happens?

English paper “The Times” has run the news that CHELSEA FC
coach Scolari has solicitated his boss Roman Abramovich that he
bring out the cheque book & make an effort this Winter for Brazilian
International & SEVILLA FC forward LUIS FABIANO

This news has been picked up locally by “As” & they go on to
explain that the serious injury to Didier Drogba has left Chelsea
short up front, a worry that Scolari wishes to cover specially after
the failed Robinho attempt.
The figure being speculated is around 30M€, however Fabiano has
just renewed contract with Sevilla until 2011 & negotiating is going
to be difficult as Fabiano is a vital part of the Sevilla team. For now,
SFS thinks its wisefull thinking from Chelsea´s part & prefers to see
how things shape up in the Winter Transfer market season. Stay
tuned!

Is the spending over?
Are Chelsea starting to build a decent youth structure?
Recently Chelsea have have been highly visible in adding young players to their ranks and looking to the future. Is this a sign that Roman is no longer prepared to spend millions on overrated 30-somethings? Just maybe.
Currently Chelsea has several kids on loan and they are constantly linked with youngsters in the press these days. Yesterday there were rumors in Norfolk of an impending bid to steal the latest in a long line of promising keepers at Norwich, young Jed Steer. He was watched yesterday by Chelsea and United scouts.
I am not too worried about it to be honest as producing excellent keepers is something our academy is doing extremely well, but Chelsea’s interest in Steer prompted me to see if there was a policy change on the horizon at the bridge. Is Roman losing faith in expensive imports? Has the notable increase in transfer fees and the arrival of other billionaire owners got Mr Abrahmovic worried?

Recently the signs of a flowering Chelsea youth system have been flashing brightly in the lower leagues. Ryan Bertrand, Jimmy Smith, Jack Cork, Slobodan Rajkovic, Lee Sawyer, Fabio Paim, Shaun Cummings and Ben Sahar are all out on loan.
Cork, Bertrand and Sahar in particular are held in very high esteem.
Bertrand (left, playing for Norwich) is a regular for his Country at under 21 level and Hull failed to sign the 19 year old left back this summer. He was loaned to Norwich for a second season.
Michael Mancienne and Scott Sinclair were both on loan in the Championship last season and this year they have made it to the first team along with young Welsh keeper Rhys Taylor and promising Argentinian forward Franco Di Santo.

Frank Arnesson’s arrival from Spurs appears to be no coincidence in the emergence of a youth agenda at Chelsea, but it’s not the immediate future that has been interesting Arnesson.
Further down the ladder, below the loanee’s and the promoted talent there is a army of talented youngsters (15-17 years old) trying to impress.
The next crop of kids nearly ready to gain some experience at Championship clubs and emulate Sinclair’s and Mancienne’s (right, playing for Q.P.R.) path to the first team.
Of that next wave no less than 15 have represented their countries. Surprisingly this next wave includes 13 English boys signed from clubs such as Leeds to non-league set-ups like Sutton United.
Signing the best young talent when you are Chelsea appears to be easy however. We can all recall their controversial acquisition of Jon Obi Mikel and the suggestion his father was charmed with gifts. Ken Bates recently accused Chelsea of tapping up midfielder Michael Woods (currently in the reserves) from Leeds. One cannot help but believe Bates’ claims as his experience at Chelsea would have allowed him unfettered access to the comings and goings of promising talent.
Just yesterday Chelsea signed 12-year-old French schoolboy Jeremy Boga. Boga has been called “the new Zidane” in his homeland, and after weeks of talks with the boy’s parents, Chelsea reached an agreement for Boga to join them when he turns 16. Expect Boga’s dad to be rolling down the King’s Road in a Ferrari 4 years from now.
While Chelsea’s financial muscle has allowed them to court many of the world’s promising young talents they should be praised for the majority of their youth ranks being English. Arsenal has 12 non-British players currently in it’s young reserves. The lack of top clubs producing young English players has been one excuse used for the many recent failures of the national team and it is refreshing to see so many lining up behind the Chelsea first team only a few years from possible Premiership starts.
Whether or not Chelsea have the balls to use them will become clear in time. Maybe they will just spend big again on 25 million pound foreigners but it is clear that the intention to develop young players is there. Watch this space.

Local Sports Daily “Marca” has picked up the news from English paper
the “Daily Mirror” that 7,5M€ separate the Ivory Coast & CHELSEA
FC forward SALOMON KALOU from FC BARCELONA.

This “surprise” news reinforces FC Barcelona concerns after the
start of the new season, that it is not scoring enough goals & that
Samuel Eto´o is not hitting the target. If the operation is finally successful
the palyer would obviously come over in December when the “Winter
Transfer Market” opens.

A late night dinner Wednesday night between Robinho´s rep Wagner
Ribiero & Chelsea FC Top Directive Peter Kenyon heralded the done
deal: REAL MADRID Brazilian forward ROBINHO was headed to
London. So confident was Chelsea that their 35M€ offer was to be
accepted that they placed on their Web page yesterday the availability
of buying the new Robinho Chelsea shirt. But something has gone
wrong & against the script.
Chelsea withdraw the Web offer hours later when it seemed that Real
Madrid announced to the English Club that Robinho would stay &
would not be transferred.

Whats going on? There are numerous rumours flying about from
all sources that are confusing & contradictory, lets attempt to see the
big picture. There are dos groups - the Madrid based Sporting papers
(Marca/AS) & the other papers (Elmundo.es/Mundo Deportivo/Sport)
- that give different angles.
Madrid Based Papers:
(A) They have announced today that Real Madrid has
rejected Chelsea FC latest offer of 35M€ & that the player will stay.
They cite the fact that Coach Schuster has expressed his desire to have
Robinho in his team & not to sell.
(B) The same papers cite that Real Madrid is angry with Chelsea for
putting on its Web site the availabilty of Robinho´s shirt, as they see it
as a “dirty” tactic of pressuring the Club.
(C) The papers, put the blame on Robinho´s representative Wagner
Ribiero in masterminding everything in the shadows & giving Chelsea´s
Peter Kenyon false hopes.
(D) Real Madrid has always said that 40M€ is the amount to begin
talking & 35M€ is still to low.

The other Papers:
(A) Yes, the operation has been stopped.
(B) The reason, that Real Madrid has´nt any player to announce
as a new signning publically to replace Robinho. They need to do so to
reduce the backlash from its ground based supporters & members.
(C) Carzola (Villareal) & Villa (Valencia) said NO to Real, this has
put Real in a further bad position with its supporters & public image.
(D) Real Madrid asked Chelsea for DROGBA - it was rejected.
(E) To find a solution, Football Director Pedja Mijatovic attempted
desperately yesterday to re-open the Kaka & Cristiano Ronaldo
options at Monaco ( Uefa Champions draw) - not successful.
(F) Only other names at this moment - PSG forward Boli & Joaquin
(Valencia) - but these are surreal & not “class names”.
According to Elmundo.es, this explains why Chelsea withdraw from
its Web Robinho´s shirt - to respect Real Madrid wish to announce
a substitute beforehand. The fact that Chelsea has sold Wright -
Phillips yesterday to Manchester City gives evidence of a deal between
Real Madrid - Chelsea. That Real Madrid maybe pressuring Chelsea
to let go Drogba & finally that Peter Kenyon is staying in Madrid for
the new events gives signal that it´s not all shut
So which news is right? Real Madrid announce that Robinho WILL
NOT be transferred & that it´s all an operation of Robinho´s
representative working in the shadows OR that Real Madrid is looking
desperately to find a replacement before letting go of its Brazilian
player?
SFS believes in the following - Yes, there was a deal. But the fact that
Cazorla & Villa said NO to Real Madrid torpedoed everything. Real
Madrid has´nt a “class name” to announce as a substitution & will not
transfer Robinho until it has one.
There is 3 days left, anything could happen…Drogba be offered for
example, which may put back in course the opeartion, but until then,
Robinho - for the moment - will stay at Real Madrid. This is the
Football CIRCUS were players are just meat to trade. Stay tuned, the
fat lady has´nt sang as yet.

In slightly sunnier news, we might be seeing the end of the Stamford Bridge love affair between Roman and his misunderstood Ukrainian plaything, Andriy Shevchenko.
We all know loans are the beginning of the end as far as player-club relations go, and there’s word that the ink is slowly drying on a deal to loan him out to AC Milan, the club where he enjoyed his greatest personal success. Shevchenko never quite sorted out the goalscoring once he left Serie A, managing to bulge the net just 9 times in 47 appearances since joining Chelsea for a whopping 30 million pounds in 2005.
He was the apple of Abramovich’s eye, and the transfer that was supposed to push the Blues far beyond anyone else’s reach (they did still win some trophies, but hardly needed Andrei for that). Instead, he was an expensive flop, akin to movies like Ishtar or anything Uwe Boll ever made, and his departure on loan should finally bring this awkward courtship to a close.
He’s still revered in Milan, and rightly so considering his track record. Still, I shall shed a tear tonight as Chelsea shed arguably their biggest joke.
After the jump, some videos of Shevchenko in happier days, you know, when he could score goals and get regular playing time.

Apparently there are second acts in English life. Failed Three Lions captain John Terry has been re-awarded the armband on a permanent basis by manager Fabio Capello. The Italian said Terry edged out fellow center half Rio Ferdinand on the strength of the little man’s BIG personality.
Sure to be some strong feelings about this decision, so what do yooooou think? Is the Brave One the Right One, or has Capello made like his new captain and slipped up in a big spot?
Speak out!
