Messi takes Atletico for a Ride; Atletico-1, Barca-3

FC Barcelona took a firm step forward in moving to the next round of Copa Del Rey with a 3-1 victory at Vicente Calderon against Athletico Madrid. It was the astonishing talent of Lionel Messi, who scored all goals Barca of the night which became the difference between the two sides. The crowd who was expecting their side seek revenge for the 6-1 drubbing by Barca the last time when the sides met was very hostile from the word go, but then you can’t blame them for that. But they deservedly gave Lionnel Messi a standing ovation when he was finally replaced by Pedro in the 80th minute. Little Lionnel has described the standing ovation as a very special moment in his playing career. Guardiola chose Pinto ahead of Jorquerra in the goal. The defense was made up of Alves, Caceres, Pique and Sylvinho. In a rather defensive looking midfield Toure played the defensive midfielder’s role. On his eitherb side Busquets and Keita were chosen. Henry was given a rest; that means Iniesta, Bojan and Messi formed the attacking trio.

The first attack of the night came from the home team with Pinto rushing off his line to clear the danger possessed by Sinama. Next it was Maniche’s chance to test the Barca keeper but his shot was easily dealt by Pinto. On the other hand Keita got Barca’s challenge forward with a great attempt at goal but only for Coupet to deny it. In the 12th minute Barca went ahead with a neat finish by Messi after a delightful one two with Messi and Alves. Maniches had one shot saved by Pinto in the 28th minute. In the 36th minute Keita wasted a great oppurtunity to go two up from a delightful Alves cross. The second half also had the same pace as the first. In the 55th minute Heitinga was given a straight red card for a foul on Messi when he looked to score from another Alves cross. The resulting penalty was converted by Messi to take Barca 2-0 up. In the 69th minute Athletico pulled one back when Ujfalusi headed from a corner. Barca retained the two goal lead in the 80th minute when Messi slotted past Coupet from a Iniesta pass. FC Barcelona will be playing the reverse leg at home in two weeks time. They already looked to set to proceed for the next round. But complacency could be the biggest enemy.

Atletico Madrid vs Barca Copa Del Rey Preview

FC Barcelona’s quest for Copa Del Rey restarts today with a tough away game against Athletico Madrid. This is one competition which Barca failed to master in recent years. Pep Guardiola would want to correct that this time around. The last time when this two team met, Barca thrashed Atletico Madrid at Camp Nou with a scoreline which read 6-1. This time around it could be a different story. First of all Athletico Madrid is not an easy place to travel; secondly Guardiola has decided to rest four of his main players. The players who won’t be travelling are Gudjohnsen, Xavi, Valdes and Eto. Puyol, Marquez and Hleb are all carrying knocks and hence are rested as a precaution. The squad selected for the match is Pinto, Jorquera, Alves, Piqué, Caceres, Abidal, Sylvinho, Victor Sanchez, Toure, Busquets, Keita, Iniesta, Messi, Pedro, Bojan, Henry. Athletico Madrid’s defense are pretty vulnerable but they have a very potent attack and it could be a real test for FC Barcelona defense who would be without the service of Puyol and Marquez.

Jorquerra would be picked ahead of Pinto in this match, eventhough he had a pathetic outing in the last Copa Del Rey match. He should be trying to redeem himself but then Athletico Madrid is not the place or the team where you try to pick your form back. He is destined to have a torrid time. Abidal and Alves would be the two full backs and would be called upon many times to help out the defense. Toure, Keita and Busquets may form the midfield. Iniesta is most likely to occupy the front left, with Henry moving into center and Messi on the right. With such an inexperienced Central Defense Guardiola may prefer a more defensive oriented midfield. There could be another possibility of Iniest moving into the midfield with Bojan spear heading the front three. The key to today’s game would be to come out unhurt. FC Barcelona is bound to get goals especially considering the fragile Atletico defense but we are also in danger as our central defenders are more error-prone. My prediction would be FC Barcelona winning by a scoreline of 1-2.

FC Barcelona Player Ratings against Real Mallorca on 03/01/09

Valdes - 6 - Didn’t have a good game. Made a number of mistakes, spilled the ball on many occasion. Looked confused when coming off the line and should thank Abidal for saving him twice.

Puyol - 8.5 - The best player on the pitch. Was good while going forward and was a constant treat upfront.

Marquez - 6.5 - Had an average game, did very well in defense but was caught out some times.

Sanchez - 3 - WAs nowhere to seen. Had to be blamed for the first goal. Then you can’t blame, he is a centre midfielder who was slotted to play the centre defense role.

Abidal - 7 - Had a decent game in both attack and defense. Most importantly covered the defense well and made no mistake.

Xavi - 8 - Great performance with so many good passes and involvement in attack.

Toure - 8 - Another stellar performance which was capped with a better goal. May be blamed for the goal but then redeemed himself later on.

Gudjonsen - 7 - Wasn’t any spectacular, but was involved in many move. Lost possession cheaply in many occasion.

Hleb - 7 - Like Gudjonsen had a decent game but nothing spectacular to show off.

Eto - 6.5 - Was missing for many time and missed some good chances.

Henry - 7.5 - Good game by the frenchman. He was the best attack minded player we had on the pitch.

Substitutes:

Alves (7), Iniesta (8) and Sylvinho (7)

Man Of The Match - Puyol

FC Barcelona Stoll On; FC Barcelona - 3, Mallorca - 1

FC Barcelona extended their winning streak with a not so convincing 3-1 victory against Real Mallorca. On a night when tempers where running pretty high on the pitch, Goals from Henry, Iniesta and Toure saw Barca overcome a determined Mallorca side who took the lead from an Aritz Aduriz goal early on. This is the second time in succession FC Barcelona is coming down from a goal down to win the match, that sounds very good as far as the rest of the season is considered. Mallorca boss prior to the match had said that they couldn’t hope for a much betetr time to play the League Leaders; he was proven right with some scrappy play by Barca players, who all have yet to achieve the full flow. Guardiola also was to be blamed partially for going a goal down in the begining as he looked to have slotted Victor Sanchez in the central defense. Victor Valdes was at the goal. The line up showed Puyol and Marquez as centre defenders; Abidal as Left-back and Victor Sanchez as Right-Back. But during the game Victor Sanchez moved to the centre and Puyol to right. The midfield was made up of Xavi, Toure and Gudjonsen. Henry, Eto and Hleb formed the front three.

The match had a very cold start. Both team were struggling to create any good chance; particularly Barca were struggling to go through Mallorca defense. The first attack from Barca came in the 13th minute when Eto shot wide from a very promising cross by Toure. In the 15th minute Aritz put Mallorca in the lead stunning the Camp Nou faithfuls after Toure gave away the ball cheaply; Artiz got the ball in the half line, then got past Victor Sanchez with ease, ran past him and flicked the ball over Victor Valdes head.In the 27th minute Gudjonsen great strike from a Xavi corner hit the cross bar. In the 29th minute Mallorca goal keeper Lux produced a magnificient save to deny Toure. In the 31st minute Thierry Henry equalised for Barca from a Xavi corner; Puyol won the initial header which fell to Henry on the left side of post; Henry’s first touch was excellent but his finish was much better. In the injury time of first half Lux produced another good save to deny Eto from a great ball from Xavi.
The second half started the same way like the first half. Both the team failed to take the initaitive early on. In the 49th minute Eto saw another of his shot blocked from a good Puyol cross. In the 52nd minute Puyol send in a great ball spotting Xavi’s run but he couldn’t control it properly, even then the ball went aganisingly close to goal. In the 56th minute Sanchez was replaced by Alves. In the 62nd minute Iniesta came in for Hleb. In the 76th minute Iniesta put Barca in lead after he finished well from a Gudjonsen cross. The build up had a bit of luck, the initial Xavi shot hit Eto and fell to Gudjonsen who crossed it to Iniesta who looked on level with Gudjonsen when the cross was made. In the 88th minute Henry’s back flick from an excelelnt Alves cross went just wide of the goal. In the 92nd minute Toure completed the score-line with a finish which would have made Eto happy on any day. Toure skipped past three defenders in the box after receiving Eto pass and fired the ball to the right hand corner of the goal.
This may not be a very convincing victory for Barca, but still it retains the lead at the top. Secondly the players are only back from holiday and it will take some time before they hit the top gear. But they better hit the top gear as soon as possible as they have a mid week match against Athletico Madrid in the Copa Del Rey competition.

SPANISH FOOTBALL - LA LIGA 2008/09 - ROUND 17 SATURDAY GAMES RESULTS (VIDEOS)

The Spanish League - “La Liga” - got back into action tonight with two
great games in Round 17 that SFS will now give in form of a resume &
with results: includes two videos of goals scored.

FC BARCELONA hosted bottom positioned MALLORCA & in the end
managed to dominante & steer home a 3-1 victory. Barça started without
Messi & Alves & felt the lack of dominance in the right side. In fact,
Mallorca was standing firm & scored first via ADURIZ as the below video

shows:

(Aduriz 14th min - goal Mallorca)

Barça reacted & managed to score the equalizer via HENRY as the below
video illustrates, a great goal:

(Henry 30th min - goal FC Barcelona)

Then for the 2ºhalf Coach Guardiola put on ALVES & INIESTA who
cameback from injury, & that transformed the side to give it more
attacking power & ball control.

INIESTA put Barça ahead in the 75th min.

TOURE scored the third in the 92th min & stamped his team dominance
to continue
were they left off last year. FC Barcelona look strong & are
THE team so far this season.

VALENCIA CF needed to win to keep up with the Barcelona train &
ATLETICO DE MADRID had a golden chance to create a gap against

its followers. However, Atletico again disappointed with a “strange”
move by Coach Aguirre to keep Maxi Rodriguez & Maniche out for the
Spanish Cup match against Barcelona next Wednesday. They paid
dearly for this decision as they lost to a resistent Valencia CF 3-1 & a
brilliant DAVID SILVA who cameback from injury.

After Valencia dominanted early on, they were rewarded with a penalty
in the 33rd min which DAVID VILLA (above) converted.

Then the DAVID SILVA show continued with his goals in the 38th min
& the 69th min, the latter a brilliant cracker from outside the area that
halted an Atletico attempted comeback after being awarded a penalty at
the end of the 1ºst half that stopped them dry.

Atletico had their chances, one as mentioned converted by DIEGO
FORLAN
via a penalty in the 45th min, & the rest stopped by the

Valencia goalkeeper in the 2ºhalf.

Deserved win for Valencia who were the better team, with Atletico
doing its habitual one step forward, two steps back routine. Their minds
- or at least Coach Aguirre´s - seemed to be on next Wednesday
Spanish Cup clash with FC Barcelona, something the SFS frankly can´t

really understand why so much importance over their League aspirations.

See the Video of the goals in this game:

To Start The New Year on the Right Note

FC Barcelona would be looking to start the new year in the same way in which they have ended the last year. With a huge ten point lead and a bigger fight between teams for the second spot, there is only one team which can prevent Barca from the Championship - i.e FC Barcelona itself. There is a high chance that players would become a bit complacent and would not focus on the pitch; but then with Guardiola in charge the chances of that happening now is very rare. FC Barcelona players have shown enough commitment on the field and on the training ground this season. The best example would be Eto and Keita cutting short their vacation to train early. Against Mallorca Iniesta is expected to start the match; how much the lack of match practice is going to affect him is yet to be seen. Lionel Messi and Daniel Alves both arrived late from vacation and it is very difficult to see them starting the line-up. As usual Guardiola has not yet named his squad. But there may be certain surprises in his mind.

Valdes would retain his position at goal. Abidal would be preferred as the Left-Back; but with the chances of Alves starting very remote, Puyol may be asked to fill the Right- Back role. In that case Marquez and Pique would join in the centre of defense. But I would prefer Puyol being pushed to centre and some one from B-Team making taking the position of Right-Back. The centre of defense would be ideally made up of Xavi, Toure and Iniesta. Up front Eto and Henry should be teaming with either Bojan or Pedro. Real Mallorca are no push-over; but still with the form displayed by FC Barcelona it is difficult to see him Mallorca taking anything out of this match. Mallorca would be using the usual style of ten men behind the ball to stop Barca; but how much they will succeed only time will tell. My prediction is FC Barcelona running away with the match with a 5-1 victory.

FC BARCELONA PLANS ITS FUTURE FORWARD LINE

The Barcelona based & pro Barça Sporting paper “Sport” publish today an
article that highlights the planification of FC BARCELONA, & in this
case, its forward line. Currently, SAMUEL ETO ´O & THIERRY
HENRY are doing the job, however the former with 28 years & offers

from half of Europe, & the latter with 32 years force some short/mild
term planning. To add to the uncertainty, Eto´o faces next year the
2010 African Cup were he will be with Camaroon & this will cause the
strike to be absent from Camp Barça for at least a month or more.

(courtesy of “Sport”)

Three names have been put up, three names the “Sport” says are
on the Barça agenda, three top class goalscorers to guarantee the
upfront firepower:

1. DAVID VILLA: Barça recently made a 35M€ offer for the Valencia
star. It was rejected. Real Madrid, Manchester City, Chelsea …have
this man on their shopping list as well.

2. BENZEMA: Barça has been flirting with the Olympique de Lyon
star all year. However, the player voices his preference for Real Madrid

who have the player down for next season as well. A bidding “war”
assured.

3. ADEBAYOR: The Arsenal star nearly landed in Barcelona last summer,
he was the planned substitute for Samuel Eto´o.

Stay tuned, SFS will keep an eye on developments.

10 Best African Players of 2008

With 2008 about to close, Road to 2010 turns its eyes to goal.com and African correspondent Samm Audu who lists the Top 10 African footballers of 2008 … what do you think?

Click above for the entire list … here’s the abridged version, along with some commentary …

10. Jon Obi Mikel - With Michael Essien injured, he’s stepped up his game at Chelsea. Considering his performance at this season’s African Cup of Nations, where he took a step backwards, he’s done well for himself.

9. Mohamed Zidan - Broke out at this year’s Cup of Nations and excelling at club team Borussia Dortmund.

8. Frederic Kanoute - So so year in my opinion.

7. Sulley Muntari - Back in Italy with Inter Milan and doing a magnificent job.

6. Didier Drogba - He’s on this list purely on reputation. Had a decent beginning of the year, but collapsed in the Champions league final, where he was red carded. After that, has battled injury much of the year.

5. Michael Essien - Injured much of the current season, but was the inspirational leader of Chelsea on their way to their first Champions League final.

4. Amr Zaki - Scored twice in the African Nations Cup semi-finals, leading Egypt to their 2nd straight title. Has capitalized on his time at England’s Wigan, where he lead the Premier League in scoring for a short bit.

3. Emmanuel Adebayor - Filled Thierry Henry’s boots quite nicely, scoring 30 times in all competitions.

2. Samuel Eto’o - On Barcelona’s scrap heap this summer, but has been wonderful in the Catalan club’s resurgence this season under new coach Pep Guardiola.

1. Mohamed Aboutrika - Egypt and Africa’s best player. Scored the goal that won Egypt their second straight African championship and guided club side Al Ahly to an African Champions League title. The best the continent has to offer …

That’s it for 2008. Enjoy the New Year and come back next year on the Road to 2010, where we’ll step up our efforts to get to South Africa and the World Cup final!

Cross your fingers. I’ll need all the luck I can get …

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

EPL Liveblog Triple-Header, Game 3: Aston Villa v. Arsenal

Nope, not today.

Boy Howdy. A cracker to end the day. What will Wenger manage considering his recent losses? No Adebayor today, no Fabregas, no Walcott still…

… come Goon with me after the jump.

FULLTIME SCORES FROM THE 10am GAMES:
Manchester City 5, Hull 1
Middlesbrough 0, Everton 1
Liverpool 3, Bolton 0
Wigan 2, Newcastle 1
Sunderland 0, Blackburn 0

LINEUPS:
Aston Villa (4-5-1): Friedel, Reo-Coker, Davies, Knight, Luke Young, Milner, Sidwell, Petrov, Barry, Ashley Young, Agbonlahor.
Subs: Guzan, Harewood, Delfouneso, Salifou, Shorey, Gardner, Osbourne.

Arsenal (4-5-1): Almunia, Sagna, Eboue, Djourou, Silvestre, Song Billong, Denilson, Nasri, Diaby, Gallas, Van Persie.
Subs: Fabianski, Toure, Vela, Ramsey, Wilshere, Clichy, Bendtner.

Referee: Lee Mason (Lancashire)

No Laursen for Villa is a huge concern, but Arsenal are walking wounded at this point so I have no sympathy. Silvestre coming in for a healthy Clichy is definitely bizarre.

We’re ready to start, I’ve got my gigantic turkey/stuffing/ham sandwich, so it’s not all bad. Get the beers in, and let’s see which Arsenal turns up this afternoon.

1 mins: Some early kick-about. If I’m a Villa fan, I’m not happy at seeing Zat Knight duff up the central defense. Still, so much pace moving forward. It’s going to take something titanic from the Arse here. Odds are heavily stacked against, etc.

Early effort for Arsenal as Sidwell and Friedel miscommunicate in front of goal under pressure, but it’s cleared.

4 mins: Milner gets a nice cross/shot in from the right, but Almunia’s equal to it. Ashley Young lurked for the rebound, but he looked offside.

6 mins: Milner wins a corner off Silvestre as it gets all scrappy in the final third. Barry floats it in and Sidwell rocks the crossbar/post with his towering header. Good start for Villa at home, so close to taking the lead!

The commentary team need to stop telling us that Sidwell played at Arsenal back in the late 90s, even winning a reserves trophy with them despite never cracking the First XI. This is no longer an interesting tidbit; it’s a bludgeoning bit of annoyance.

8 mins: More pressure at the Arsenal end as Almunia comes out to meet the long ball with his head just outside the box as Agbonlahor was closing in.

11 mins: A gorgeous deep cross in from Barry via a free kick, and Curtis Davies meets it wide open at the edge of the 6-yard box. His header goes a mile wide. A supremely wasted effort.

14 mins: Lovely play by Arsenal on the break finds Van Persie in the box. His first touch is perfect off the chest, but the giant oaf Zat Knight gets across to snuff out the danger, and in the nick of time too.

16 mins: More desperate defending by the Gooners, and you’d be forgiven for thinking that soccer was played in just one half of the field. A couple of dangerous crosses, a save by Almunia… par for the course at the moment. Arsenal are looking to break but their passing is rather lazy and gifting Villa more possession.

20 mins: Denilson and Sagna aren’t going to take this pressure lying down, and neither’s Diaby; his long ball looks for van Persie but is cleared. Song fouls Barry in midfield, and we’re back down the other end.

Great break for Agbonlahor, and he spins Eboue like a dreidel; his low shot is parried by Almunia, and Sidwell’s follow-up is blocked by Gallas and out for a corner. Nervy times again at the back for Arsenal. The lack of pace possessed by William Gauloises and Emmanuel will be exposed soon enough unless they get some help.

22 mins: More scrambling at the back as Villa seem to get free down the wings whenever they want. Another Milner cross is humped clear at the near post, and Eboue tries to reset the defense. The big problem for Arsenal resides in that crowded midfield; they’re so young and inexperienced and they’re having a tough time keeping possession. The key to stopping Villa is to stop their distribution up to Agbo and Ashley. If the Gooners can hold the ball for more than 3 passes, they have a chance to slow things down. At the moment, it’s end-to-end sprinting and Almunia is keeping them in it.

25 mins: To prove my point almost immediately, Petrov wins it easily from Denilson and is promptly battered by Song, earning Song a yellow card. Villa pour forward once more.

26 mins: Arse flirt with danger via their offside trap as Young gets over the top, but he’s marginally offside. Not much in it at all.

28 mins: The beast that is Friedel is awoken from a rather peaceful slumber by an Arsenal free kick that he fists to safety. Villa break up the left with Young and Agbo combining once more, but Almunia cuts off the final pass and hoists it out of play. The Villa fans are in full song at the moment, and the tackling in midfield is getting later and later from both sides.

Villa have had 6 attempts on goal, 2 on target, and 5 corners. Arsenal have 0s in every category. Sense a pattern emerging? If you decipher those numbers as being indicative of complete and total Aston Villa domination, you’d be right.

30 mins: Ashley tests the offside trap yet again but Sagna’s got it right. Living on the edge, truly. Nasri makes a rare jaunt down the left and is interrupted emphatically by Reo-Coker’s sliding tackle.

33 mins: A foul in the box gives Arsenal a breather and Almunia launches it down the other end. Wenger needs to bring Clichy on at some point, because Milner is in danger of owning poor Silvestre for life.

Gallas does well to cut off Agbonlahor’s sprint down the left.

34 mins: GOAL GOAL GO-ALMOST for Aston Villa. Nasri does a spot of ball-watching as Barry lofts a free kick to the back post, and Milner sneaks in unnoticed. His sliding effort is well saved by Almunia low to his left via the post. Hit the post, bobbled back into Almunia’s arms. Should have been 1-0.

36 mins: Eboue, meet yellow card. Yellow card, meet Eboue. Get acquainted, fellas. He chopped Agbo down on the wing from behind and had no complaints about that one.

37 mins: GO-ALMOST for Villa again! Davies’ hook shot on the right sails over Almunia’s head, and Miguel is helpless as he watches it rattle off the crossbar and away from danger. Third Villa instance of ball-to-woodwork already today.

If the goal were a foot wider, it’s be 3-0. That said, if Grandma had balls, she’d be Grandpa. A difficult first half for Wenger. If he goes to his bench after the break, he’s got nothing but youth to turn to. I can’t imagine Wilshere or Ramsey doing much to stem the tide.

40 mins: GOAL GOAL GOAL GOAL… Unbelievable, really. The Gooners’ first effort on goal brings them a goal. A lucky bounce frees Denilson in the area, and he does superbly well under pressure to slide the ball between Friedel’s legs and give his side the lead, completely against the run of play and in defiance of the gods, physics, logic, rational thought, and Lady Fortune. Aston Villa 0, Arsenal 1

How will Villa respond? By falling apart, it seems. Suddenly they’re skittish and give van Persie time to stepover and dribble in the box, but RvP’s cross falls to no-one at the back post. Punishment for their profligacy, surely. (And yes, for anyone who’s been mad enough to follow all these liveblogs today, that’s my favourite word at the moment.)

43 mins: I’m speechless. Agbonlahor beats Almunia to the ball in the air and it speeds goalward, but Sagna overhead-kicks it off the line to save Almunia’s bacon. The Gunners live to fight another day!

Song off due to injury, Aaron Ramsey on. He’s in for a dogfight in the middle.

HALFTIME: Aston Villa 0, Arsenal 1
A simply outrageous 45 minutes of football. Villa hit the woodwork three times, Sagna clears acrobatically off the line, and Denilson scored against the run of play with the Gunners’ only scoring chance. What will Martin O’Neill say at halftime?

999 times out of 1000, he misses it. Not today, however!

It’s set up nicely for the second half. If Villa can recover, they could open up a 6 point gap between them and Arse. If it holds as is, they’ll be level once more. Who said the EPL is predictable?

We’re back, and O’Neill must wonder if his team can salvage something. That has to hurt; dominate for 44 minutes, yet still a goal down. I reckon it rates next to going 18-0 but ruining it at the last minute, albeit on a much smaller scale.

46 mins: No subs, and some header tennis in midfield. Nasri gets an inch of space on the left wing, but Milner and Petrov harry him and he gives up the goal kick.

Gauloises punts a long clearance, but Ramsey’s long pass goes right out for the Villa throw. Holding possession is of the utmost importance for the Goons.

48 mins: Barry’s long cross from the right is cleared easily.

GOAL GOAL GOAL GOAL and that, my friends, is how to surpass expectations. Delirium for the away fans, as Abou Diaby nips in behind Knight to finish into the top corner. Unbelievable. It was a half-break at best that caught Villa out, and a wonderfully calm finish. Eboue set him loose after some nice play on the right that left Curtis Davies for dust. Villa haven’t done much wrong, and they’re 2-0 down. As I said… unbelievable. Aston Villa 0, Arsenal 2

Diaby gets booked for his Lambeau-esque leap into the away fans after scoring, but do you think he cares?

53 mins: Amid the noise and frenzy, how will Villa respond? Agbo wins a throw on the left but it’s wasted thanks to Young’s cross-to-nowhere. It’s going to take something epic to get them back in this one. For all their possession and early pressure, they look positively lost as to how they should respond. It’s their turn to chase the ball around for a few minutes.

After my shit-talking on the Gooners, this is a hell of a way to respond to their recent troubles. Just when they’re written off, they go and pull this.

55 mins: Should have been three! Diaby does his best Thierry Henry impression in slicing up the middle, passing to Ramsey who has his initial shot blocked, then van Persie gets a sniff and hits the post before his follow-up is deflected out for a corner. Nothing comes of it except for another corner. A third goal would be unlucky for Villa, but really, they should have been 3-0 up before Denilson’s cool finish. Funny game, this. The confidence is all with Arsenal.

Villa clear the 2nd corner as far as Ramsey, and his gorgeous chip finds RvP with space to head home. His header goes a mile wide. Still, Aston Villa are falling apart before our very eyes. It’s Arsenal chants ringing out around Villa Park. How will O’Neill respond? Missing Laursen was more serious than he expected.

59 mins: Agbonlahor squanders possession in the Arsenal box and the Gunners break again. At the back, Villa are like single-ply toilet paper. Diaby gets blocked from shooting but it comes to Nasri who finds Eboue wide open, and his goal-bound shot is blocked at the last second. Curtis Davies the hero that time. One-way traffic towards Friedel’s goal at the moment. Funny what two goals will do to a game.

62 mins: Another Arsenal corner. Villa are confused. I blame tainted half-time oranges. They look more like Tottenham than Top 4.

Agbo gives it up easily again on the right. Villa are a great team when they’re winning, but they never look like getting back into a game when they’re struggling.

Just as I type this, Sidwell gets free down the right and plants it right on Ashley Young’s foot in front of goal, but there’s Bacary Sagna to stick a foot in as Young picks his spot. Superb defending, and a glimmer of life for Villa.

64 mins: PENALTY TO VILLA. Deserved too; he gets caught out by Milner’s long pass and Agbonlahor has a step on him. Gauloises decides to tackle, but hashes it, and Barry has a chance to pull Villa back into it…

… GOAL GOAL GOAL GOAL for Gareth Barry from the spot, sending Almunia the wrong way. Emphatic finish, and the crowd’s awake again. Testing times for Arsenal now. A phenomenal match thus far. Aston Villa 1, Arsenal 2

68 mins: Wenger is still miffed about the penalty, but there’s more pressing issues at stake now. 25 minutes to go, and you never want to give Villa way back into the game. Almunia races out to clear a long ball aimed for Gabby down the line.

70 mins: Arsenal look like the Arsenal of the first half all over again. Struggling to maintain possession, and letting Villa come to them. Gabby takes on Sagna down the left, but Bacary wins that round.

Sidenote: I wish Rafa Benitez could buy Sagna. He’s having an incredible game thus far, goalline clearance aside.

72 mins: Arsenal throw men forward again, but their attack fizzles out at the top of the box. Villa break with speed, but no dice. Agbo looks like he got a knock in that from-behind tackle on Diaby, and he gets a yellow card on top of it.

Sagna clears under pressure from Luke Young and the Gunners try to slow things down. It doesn’t work; Sagna’s throw goes right to Young, and when the cross comes in, it misses everyone and falls to Milner, whose shot is blocked at the edge of the box. He crosses in the rebound, and Villa put up a large shout for handball. No dice.

Ashley Young gets loose on the left again, but his cross is met in the middle by Almunia.

76 mins: Simmer down now, fellas, as things get heated in midfield. Diaby is chopped down, and then seconds later, van Persie gets beaten to the ball by Reo-Coker and then tracks him down to take him down. RvP gets a yellow card, the first meaningful thing he’s done in 25+ minutes. Reo-Coker gets one too for his pushing and shoving. Bit silly - not a booking at all for either of them.

78 mins: Sagna’s weak sidefooted clearance falls to Ashley Young in the box, but his floated cross is intercepted by Almunia. Deep breath for Arsenal… just over 15 minutes left.

80 mins: Eboue creates a problem by ignoring Almunia’s call for the ball and trying to clear it himself, but mercifully for him, Gabby fouls on the loose ball and the crisis disappears.

Sagna again with the heroics. Barry gets room to run at the backline, finds Sidwell whose shot is blocked. Ashley Young is lurking at the back post, but Sagna gets across to block the cross. The corner bobbles around in the area, but neither Knight nor Milner can finish. Imagine how dangerous these Villa corners could have been with Laursen in the mix.

Stiliyan Petrov is pissed about not getting a throw-in and gets booked for yelling at the linesman.

Sub for Arsenal: Samir “The Ghost” Nasri on, Gael Clichy on.

FC Barcelona Marches On; Villareal-1,Barca-2

Barcelona moved ten points clear of their nearest rival with a hard fought win at El Madrigal. Goals from Keita and Henry helped Barca to continue their unbeaten streak after Barca have gone behind from a goal from Cani. To make things worse Barca’s Pique was sent off and had to hold off with ten men in the final ten minutes. But overall it was a very satisfying, tough and hard fought victory. Pep Guardiola chose Busquets ahead of Toure. Alves, Pique, Puyol and Alves formed the back four. The midfield as expected were packed with defensive players with Xavi partnering, Busquets and Keita. Henry, Messi and Eto formed front three. Messi had another quiet game by his standard but it was good to see Xavi hitting top form.

Barca as expected dominated possession from the beginining, but couldn’t break an organised defense. Majority of the chances in the first half fell to Henry and he did waste a few of them. There were questioned raised about Barcelona’s ability to respond after going behind against quality team; that should temporarily subsidise now. Just after the breakCani put Villareal forward with a neat finish afetr the defense failed to keep hold of him. Barca responded vigourously and was rewarded by the goal in the 54th minute when Keita lept bravely in front of Diego Lopez to head into the empty net. Then in the 66th minute Henry put Barca ahead with a great volley from a Xavi cross. Then in the 74th minute Pique was sent off picking his second card in a space of three minutes. Reduced to Ten men Guardiola brought Caceres for Henry and re-organised the defense. With the one man advantage Villareal started pressing in the final moments and should have equalised but Nihat and Franco wasted their chances.
