Chelsea will not be fielding their academy players in tomorrow’s Carling Cup tie with Burnley.
The Independent says Luiz Felipe Scolari will not pick an experimental team of Chelsea academy players to face Burnley because he has been told by his senior players that they want to play in and win the competition. Unlike Arsenal and Manchester United, Scolari knows that many of his biggest names want the chance of winning the Carling Cup for a third time in five years.
Chelsea’s senior players feel that their three recent appearances in Carling Cup finals (2005, 2007 and 2008) have been among the most memorable games since Roman Abramovich’s arrival. As a result they are unwilling to stand aside.
Agent demands £170,000-a-week for Man Utd ace Ronaldo
Jorge Mendes hopes to secure a bumper pay-rise for his client, Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Mirror says Mendes wants to talk about a deal that would see Ronaldo get around £170,000 a week just a couple of months after turning down a move to Real Madrid.
However, United are reluctant to give Ronaldo a new deal so soon, with chief executive David Gill believing their star is already firmly under contract.
Ronaldo signed a five-year deal in April 2007 and is on around £120,000 a week. But an improved contract would lead to the likes of Rio Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney demanding hikes, too.
Mendes wants to know United’s thinking and planning after the two camps declared an uneasy peace after the summer.
United are aware the threat of Real Madrid remains despite the Spanish club’s statements to the contrary.
Henry To Chelsea
According to reports which may or may not be reliable, Chelsea could be about to launch a January swoop for Barcelona forward Thierry Henry.
Reports in both English and Spanish tabloids have suggested that Luiz Felipe Scolari is preparing to unleash an £8 million bid to lure iconic Frenchman Thierry Henry back to London.
The 31-year-old striker is currently in his second season at Barcelona, but has not scaled the heights that saw him crowned a bona-fide legend at Highbury and the Emirates with Arsenal.
Scolari is eager to bolster Chelsea’s attacking options, with strikers painfully thin on the ground outside of Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka.
Chelsea’s planned raid for Robinho was usurped by newly-monied Manchester City over the summer, leaving Scolari with limited options at the business end of the field.
He has been making noises about adding to his panel during the January sales, even though the economic downturn has left the once richest club in the world with unprecedented financial constraints.
According to The People newspaper, the Blues may have as little as £5 million with which to bid over the winter, while Henry is likey to command a fee at least twice that amount, with his wages set to be in the region of £120,000 a week.
The player was also linked with Manchester City, but is known to have a strong affection for London return.
He has been quoted by the press as saying: “Though I work in Barcelona my heart is in London.” However, he has also said, repeatedly, that he is happy at Barca, that Arsenal are in his heart and that he could not envisage playing for any other Premier League club after his time as a Gunner.
But then as we all know, things can change rapidly in football.

Barca teammate Thierry Henry thinks that Lionel Messi is The Best Player in the World:
“Messi is the best. What he does is from another world…He is exceptional…After watching Arsenal against Manchester United, I insist Cristiano Ronaldo is one thing and Messi is another…There is no comparison. Messi deserves to win the Ballon d’Or this year.”

Gunners lacking leadership on the pitch
So the finger pointing can begin. After throwing away a two-goal lead against Tottenham on Wednesday night it has been revealed that the Arsenal players turned the air blue with their post-match bust-up in the dressing room.
Publicly, all Arsene Wenger would say was “we have to look at ourselves and improve”, but behind the scenes it would appear that he had a few choice words to say to his senior players, most notably Willam Gallas, Mikael Silvestre and Emmanuel Adebayor.
Yet Wenger must take a portion of the blame himself. For all of Arsenal’s pace, elegance and exuberance, they lack a leader to take control of a game when it turns sour and Wenger’s refusal to sign experienced players has not helped.
The last few minutes were a prime example of immaturity against Tottenham and it is hard to imagine the side capitulating so easily, had Patrick Vieira or Tony Adams been on the pitch.
Adams has now been tasked with pulling Portsmouth up by the bootstraps in his new role as manager, but one of Arsenal’s greatest ever captains must have had one eye on the Emirates as the Arsenal defence crumbled. As a fan he will not have liked what he saw but, like every other Premier League manager, he will now be seeking to capitalise on Arsenal’s soft centre.
Only four clubs boast a better defensive record than Arsenal this season, but it is notable that both Chelsea and Manchester United have conceded half as many goals. The Gunners’ defence is simply not strong enough to mount a serious title charge and the blame can, mainly, be placed with the captain.
Where Chelsea have John Terry, United have one of Rio Ferdinand, Gary Neville or Ryan Giggs and by comparison, Gallas just doesn’t match up.
The Frenchman lacks the authority, determination and respect to hold such a prestigious position at the club. A good defender, Gallas has proven with numerous misdemeanours (including the tantrum at St Andrews’ last year and open criticism of Theo Walcott), that he is not the man to lead Arsenal forward.
But Wenger has made mistakes in appointing captains before. Using the role as a means to keep his best players happy in the past, he gave Thierry Henry the position before his summer move to Barcelona despite having said that he prefers his skippers to play at the back.
Overlooking Gilberto Silva for Gallas last season may have hastened the Brazilian’s exit from the club but, more importantly, it proved that Wenger places personal reasons above the team dynamic. Gallas and Henry, while massively important players, were never captain material and, years after the event, Patrick Vieira’s departure from the club is still being felt.
Gallas has a hamstring injury ahead of a tough trip to Stoke’s Britannia Stadium this weekend and, while cynics may question the validity of the injury in the midst of such criticism, it could work in Arsenal’s favour. Ultimately it may force a real leader from within the current squad to reveal themselves.

Beckham to join AC Milan on loan in January
David Beckham will have only two months to make an impact at AC Milan after clinching a loan move to the Serie A giants on Thursday. The 33-year-old England midfielder will join Milan on January 7 and could make his debut four days later away to Roma.
David Beckham’s presence failed to inspire Galaxy to great things during the MLS this season.
But he must return to the Los Angeles Galaxy by early March, to prepare for the Major League Soccer season, which is expected to start on March 19. All parties concerned are content with the terms of the deal, which was struck in Milan a week earlier than anticipated.
Milan director Umberto Gandini told Sky Sports News: ”The deal will be as long as David wishes. I think his commitment to MLS and Los Angeles Galaxy will take him back after a couple of months. I think he will have to go back to Galaxy by the time the MLS starts, and training before that.”
Gandini also confirmed that the Italian club do not expect any opportunity to arise which would allow them to sign the 33-year-old permanently, saying: ”David is committed to the Los Angeles Galaxy and the MLS. He thanks them for the opportunity to let him train and work with us, we’re very happy for that.
”Only David knows his future, but for sure he has a commitment to go back to the MLS and I think he will fulfil that.”
Beckham is seeking to maintain his match fitness to ensure he stays in the England squad as he closes in on a record number of caps for an outfield player. The former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder has 107 caps, one behind the late Bobby Moore who led England to their 1966 World Cup triumph.
The former England captain hopes to retain his place in coach Fabio Capello’s squad and is believed to be targeting international retirement after the 2010 World Cup.
Capello has indicated he will only select players who are active with their clubs, and with LA Galaxy now in their off-season, Beckham risked being left out for upcoming games, including the proposed friendly against European champions Spain in February.
Beckham will join a star-crammed squad at Milan, with the likes of Kaka, Andriy Shevchenko and Ronaldinho soon to be team-mates.
”The players understand we are the premium brand,” said Gandini. ”We are a fantastic club, one of the best clubs in the world. The fact they want to play with us is a great achievement.
”David Beckham will come to our club where he will have a lot of people and a lot of players that have his ability and status so I think it will be very beneficial for him and the English game.”
Beckham is by no means certain to feature regularly for Milan, with nothing in his contract stipulating he will play in a specific number of games. Gandini confirmed: ”He will train with the other Milan players and the selection will be up to the coaches.”
Capello expects David Beckham will prove to be a ”great acquisition” for Milan, the England coach’s former club. Capello has worked with Beckham at Real Madrid and England and has been impressed by his work-rate.
Speaking before the deal was completed, Capello told Milan’s World Business Forum: ”If Milan sign him they will make a great acquisition. He is a very focused lad. He is a professional. When I left him out of the team in Madrid because he had signed the contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy, he continued to come to the pitch to train and I put him back in the team.”
”He is a very serious lad, very sensible, a professional. People think he is a playboy off the field, it’s not true at all,” added Capello
Talks over Beckham’s future were originally scheduled for next week, but the player’s representatives and Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani met on Thursday afternoon to thrash out the transfer.
The former England captain was a Milan target in January 2007, but opted instead to move to Los Angeles from Real Madrid.
In a joint statement Milan and LA Galaxy confirmed Beckham would return to the States for training before the MLS begins, which suggests he will spend just two months back in Europe.
Writing on his website’s blog Beckham this week admitted he was looking forward to joining Milan.
He explained: ”One of the reasons I want to train and play in Milan for a few months is the fact that the MLS season doesn’t run as long as the European season and having played most of my career in Europe, my body has been trained and geared not to have that amount of time off.
”Obviously, I will be honoured to be given the chance to train and play with the likes of Ronaldinho and Kaka, but it also gives me the chance to keep my fitness up and carry that on for when I come back to the Galaxy for the new MLS season.”
He rubbished suggestions he had bought a house in Milan and denied planning to purchase a jet, and also confirmed LA Galaxy remain his priority.
”Next season is an important one for the Galaxy,” Beckham remarked. ”We haven’t been in the play-offs for three years now and for a team like LA Galaxy we all know that isn’t good enough.
”(Head coach) Bruce Arena will also have had the chance over the past few months to get used to the squad and, with his experience and previous success, he’ll want to make sure that we’re up there competing next year.”
Galaxy boss Arena has given his blessing to Beckham’s transfer. Arena had described the deal as ”an odd proposition” last week and questioned whether the MLS and Galaxy would benefit.
However he has become convinced Beckham is making the right move.
”Clearly I think this is an ideal situation for David,” Arena told Sky Sports News. ”It can benefit David, it can benefit England, it can benefit the LA Galaxy and hopefully it benefits AC Milan as well.”
Arena expects the 2009 MLS season to start on March 19, and he stressed Beckham will be involved.
”David will be back and have a couple of weeks of training with our team and will be ready to really kick off in a good fashion in 2009,” Arena said.
The former United States head coach recognises Beckham’s desire to stay involved and active with England.
”I can’t speak for David but what motivates any top-level footballer is the fact that playing for your national team is the greatest honour,” Arena said. ”And having the potential to play in another World Cup is every player’s dream. I think these are the things that motivate him.”
Little chance of permanent Becks deal - Milan
AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani says that the chances of David Beckham remaining at the San Siro beyond the end of his loan from LA Galaxy are non-existent saying that any moves to make the deal more permanent are “not practical”.
The Rossoneri have reached an agreement which will see the England midfielder join the Milan club on the short-term from Galaxy. He will join on January 7 before returning to America in time for the start of the MLS season, which is expected to kick off on March 19 although the final schedule has not been finalised.
“David’s arrival is a dream that becomes a reality,” admitted a delighted Galliani. “We haven’t written the contract but the agreement has been reached,” said Galliani.
“Beckham will be at Milan on loan from January 7 until the start of the Major League Soccer, hence, for two months-and-a-half to three months.”
Galliani added that Milan’s hopes of keeping the 33-year-old at the San Siro on a permanent basis are non-existent.
“That possibility is not practical because he has a contract with the Galaxy,” he said. “The club want him to remain in Los Angeles and he is happy there.
“Moreover, he has many advertising contracts.”
Beckham could make his Serie A debut away to Rome on January 11 and could be playing alongside Ronaldinho, who joined the Rossoneri on a permanent transfer from Barcelona this summer and is looking forward to playing alongside Beckham, a player he faced while in the Primera Liga with Barca.
“I am happy that Beckham is arriving,” said the Brazilian star. “I hope he will help us. He has so much quality.”
Capello delighted with Beckham’s Milan loan
England boss Fabio Capello fully approves of David Beckham’s move to AC Milan, whom the England midfielder will join on loan on January 7.
David Beckham feels that a move to AC Milan would help prolong his England career.
As the deal is Beckham is only available for nine Serie A matches, the first of which will be away to Roma on January 11 but he will be training at high intensity and will be determined to win a place in Carlo Ancelotti’s team, with Capello certain the Milan boss will be impressed by the England midfielder’s attitude.
Speaking just before Beckham’s move was confirmed, Capello said: “If Milan sign him they will make a great acquisition. He is a very focused lad. He is a professional.”
Beckham’s motivation for moving to Italy is he is determined to extend his England career, with Capello having warned he would miss the proposed friendly against Spain in February if he was inactive.
Capello recalled his own experiences of the former Manchester United’s star’s strength in adversity: “When I left him out of the team in Madrid because he had signed the contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy, he continued to come to the pitch to train and I put him back in the team.”
Beckham, 33, must return to LA Galaxy by early March, to prepare for the MLS season, which is expected to start on March 19.
And, for the moment, all parties concerned are content with the terms of the deal.
Milan director Umberto Gandini told Sky Sports News: “Only David knows his future, but for sure he has a commitment to go back to the MLS and I think he will fulfil that.”

Xavi Hernandes has been ruled out of today’s match against Athletic Bilbao. His ommision has been explained as a precautionery measure in the official club website. Xavi is making googd progress from a harmstring problem and should feature in the mid-week Champions League encounter with Basel. The squad chosen are Valdés, Pinto, Alves, VÃctor Sánchez, Puyol, Márquez, Piqué, Abidal, Sylvinho, Busquets, Touré Yaya, Keita, Iniesta, Bojan, Hleb, Henry, Eto’o and Messi. Notably Hleb makes a comeback and should see some time in the pitch. But the absence of Xavi throws up the usual combination used by Guardiola. In the absence of Xavi the creative spearhead role in the midfield should be done byu Andres Iniesta. Keita may be inadequete to do that role. That opens up a place for Thierry Henry on the left side of the attacking trio.
Athletic Bilbao lies fifteenth in the La Liga table. Barcelona in the last game has thrashed a far superior Atletico Madrid side and Athletic Bilbao should not come as tough. But how many times we have seen FC Barcelona failing miserably after an international break. Alves is back and should start at the right back position. Puyol is expected to start along with either Pique or Marquez. Abidal will be starting as left back with enough confidence from his performance against Atletico Madrid. The midfield most probably would be made of Keita, Iniesta and Toure. The forward trio will be Henry, Messi and Eto. FC Barcelona fans would be expecting great things from their side after the Atletico Madrid thrashing. But my advice - keep your expectation low; a 1-0 or a 2-1 victory would be as good as last match.

The first leg of the international break is over; altogether it can be said that it was a very satisfactory first leg for many FC Barcelona players. As usual we will start with South American Qualifier. Argentina beat Uruguay with a scoreline of 2 goals to one to end their winless streak. Barca players - Lionel Messi and Martin Caceres both started this match for their respective teams. Lionel Messi put Argentina ahead in the fifth minute through a header from the former Barca player Riquelme’s cross. After seven minutes Atletico Madrid striker Sergio Aguero doubled the lead. Diego Lugano reduced the lead for Uruguay in the 39th minute. From South America to Africa now.
All of FC Barcelona players from Africa had a very successful night. Yaya Toure started in the starting eleven in the 3-0 victory over Madagascar. Boubacar Sanogo scored twice for Ivory Coast and team mate Simon Kalou made it 3-0 for the night. Samuel Eto starred in Cameroon’s 5-0 thrashing of Mauritius. Eto scored two goals - one from penalty in the 47th minute and the first goal in the 26th minute. Keita also started in Mali’s 2-1 victory against Chad. Tenema Ndiaye and Cheick Diabate were the goal scorer for Mali whereas Leger Djime scored for Chad. In Europe Barca players had a mixed night. Eidur Gudjonsen’s Iceland was defeated by a much superior Dutch team. The dutch side had Van Der Saar guarding the goal after coming out of international retirement. Huntelaar and Mathijsen scored for the dutch. France were lucky to grab a point from their match against Romania. Romania went two up with in 16 minutes with help of goals from Petre and Goian. Ribery pulled one back for France in the 36th minute and Gourcuff equalised in the 68th minute to the relief of captain Thierry Henry. Meanwhile Spain continued their excellent run with a 3-0 victory over Estonia. Juanito, Villa and Puyol all entered the scoresheet.

In-form Barcelona thrashed Atletico Madrid 6-1, scoring five goals inside the first 28 minutes of a thrilling encounter at the Camp Nou.
Barca made a flying start to be 3-0 ahead after nine minutes, with Rafael Marquez, Samuel Eto’o and Lionel Messi getting on the scoresheet, before Maxi Roriguez pulled a goal back for the visitors.
Eto’o’s second of the evening made the score 4-1 18 minutes in and Eidur Gudjohnsen added the fifth ten minutes later.
The second half was a more sedate affair, with Thierry Henry completing the scoring 17 minutes from time.
Barca coach Pep Guardiola told the club’s official website: “I want to give thanks to the fans. I would like them to understand that with them we are stronger.
“We know very clearly we play for the people, not only for us.
“We have fulfilled our mission and we want to always play with this intensity. It is a good sign and one to convince us that we can do the same again.”
Meanwhile, Villarreal scored twice in two minutes to come from behind to beat Real Betis 2-1 at El Madrigal.
Abella Damia gave the visitors a 20th minute lead, but the Yellow Submarine hit back through Gonzalo Rodriguez and Joseba Llorente to take the victory and remain top of the table.

FC Barcelona produced another last Gasp victory to clinch all three points and move to the top of the group. Shaktar Donetsk would have really deserved at least a point after leading the game for majority of the game. FC Barcelona found it very difficult to deal with the physical style of game which Shaktar employed and their task was made an Herculean one with an English referee in charge. Guardiola went back to the 3-4-3 formation he used against Lisbon in the last Champions League. But against such physical opponents a usual 4-3-3 formation would have been much better. Puyol and Alves were really troubled by Shaktar players. Guardiola had Puyol as Left Back, Marquez played a centre role and Pique played the right Back role. Ahead of Pique was Alves and ahead of him was the combination of Keita, xavi and Toure holding the midfield. With Messi rested Iniesta moved to the right and Eto to the left and Henry played the centre striker role.
Thierry henry wasted the best chance of FC Barcelona in the 7th minute when Eto send a great ball to Henry who shot the ball close to the Goal Keeper. Actually that was the only clear cut chance Barca created in the whole of the first half. Majority of the half was played in midfield with both the teams wrestling to retain possesion. In the 37th minute Valdes produced a briliant save to deny Ilsinho after Marquez failed to deal with an average cross from Brandao. But in the 45th minute Valdes remained helpless when Ilsinho slot the ball past him to take the lead after some awful defending by Puyol Marquez and Pique. Pique made a mess of an aerial ball and headed back wards towards Ilsinho who was surrounded by Puyol and Marquez; Puyol’s first touch was horrible and Ilsinho broke past both of them to give Shaktar a shock lead.
FC Barcelona came out more determined in the second half. Iniesta tried to up the tempo but none of his team mates could link well with him. In the 53rd minute free kick from Alves was saved by Pyatov, the Shaktar custodian; that ball swirles and was going to the far left bottom corner of the goal. Guardiola brought Messi in for Henry and within eight minutes he had a great impact. In the 68th minute Messi played a great ball to Eto who wasted a golden chance to equalise from a one on one situation by holding to the ball for more time and then slotting the shot just wide of the goal. In the 74th minute Bojan was brought in for Eto and suddenly Barca started to find pace in their move. In the 77th minute Valdes produced another save to deny Srna from a free kick. In the 82nd minute Gudjonsen was brought in for Keita. In the same minute Bojan dribbled past four defenders in to the box but his shot hit side netting. In the 86th minute Iniesta send a great cross from left but Messi failed to control it. In the 87th minute Messi equalised after a fumble by Pyatov. This was claimed to be a controversial goal but I never understood why it was controversial. The incident started with Shaktar players clearing the ball from their box to safety. At the same time one of their defender fell down injured and it was clear that he was faking it to kill time as he got up the moment the ball was cleared. On a second look the defender who cleared the ball never knew that his fellow player has fallen down and he did to clear any danger out of the box. Shaktar players expected Barca players to kick the ball away from throwin, Bojan was not interested and he slotted a Cross from left, a very harmless cross; Goal Keeper Pyatov, failed to held on to the simplest of the ball and it fell straight to Messi who slotted it to the Goal. Shaktar players protested and this protest and their time wasting act came to haunt them in the 94th minute when Messi chipped over the Goal Keeper’s head to slot Barcelona’s second after receiving a wonderful ball from Xavi.

The Catalan derby this weekend between Barcelona and Espanyol was a thriller. Barca pulled off the comeback win against a 10-man Espanyol after an 85th minute equalizer from Thierry Henry and then Leo Messi converted a dubious penalty kick (weren’t they all this last weekend?) in the 103rd minute. (By the way, take a look at the shot graphic on that link, Barca outshot them 33 to 5.)
Yeah, that’s right, the 103rd minute. Not a typo. Which gets me to the reason for the old Tank Wars graphic up top.
Seems during the match the visiting Blaugrana fans decided to turn the match into their own personal old-school video game as they tossed flares on to the home fans. Naturally, this did not go over well and ended up in the match being stopped for 8 minutes in the second half.
After the jump, see the video of the flare toss. The first is better than the second, and the end of the video has a nice chant with the word “Puta” involved, although my Spanish is about as good as Newcastle United’s football team so I could be wrong.
Needless to say, the emotions were running high after the controversial match concluded after the witching hour. My parents used to tell me, nothing good comes from actions at that time of the night. I would submit to you that they were wrong because I get to read about these sorts of things from The Guardian Blog:
Way after midnight under the hulking concrete stands of the LluÃs Companys stadium Barcelona’s Thierry Henry shrugged, washing his hands conveniently clean, and Leo Messi beamed. Espanyol’s broken players mostly bit their tongues and walked on by silently simmering, as the coaches Pep Guardiola and TintÃn Márquez tried to impose peace. But few were having it.
Samuel Eto’o returned to the scene of the crime, glorying in it. The Espanyol president Daniel Sánchez Llibre spontaneously combusted. A kerfuffle broke out and suddenly Gerard Piqué was squaring up to an Espanyol director. “I don’t want to call it a robbery because they’ll charge me for it,” snapped Sánchez Llibre, forgetting how much he liked La Liga when Espanyol were top. “This league is completely prostituted.”
Puta, indeed.
Update: The Offside has another video of the flare throwing.
